TMS 2020

Between the 23rd – 27th of February 2020, Simon and Hao from the University of Sydney, and the UNSW team members Sophie and Ryan traveled to San Diego in the USA to attend the 150th annual meeting of the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). This meeting usually brings together more than 4,000 engineers, scientists, business leaders, and other professionals in the minerals, metals, and materials fields for a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary exchange of technical knowledge.

During the meeting, Simon gave a Keynote talk on “Microstructural Control for Additive Manufacturing – An Advanced Microscopy Approach” and an invited talk on additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Ryan and Hao gave oral presentations on “3D characterization of alpha phase morphology and variant selection in EBM Ti-6Al-4V” and “Effect of cyclic rapid thermal loadings on the microstructural evolution of a Cantor alloy during Selective Laser Melting”, respectively.

We met the team members from the MURI team, led by Prof. Suresh Babu, Prof. Peter Collins, Prof. Tresa Pollock and students Sabina, Rakesh, Michael and Meiyue, and had several good discussions about our joint project and additive manufacturing in general. The 3D Additive team really enjoyed meeting our MURI colleagues and we are looking forward to further meetings like this, as they always provide an excellent opportunity for in-depth discussions and new collaborations.
